Hinterland Insurance (collectively, “Hinterland”) is committed to protecting the privacy of certain data that is collected from you and that you submit when you access this website (collectively, the “Site”). The nature of our business requires that at times we gather information that is of a personal nature and that you may wish to keep protected. This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) is intended to familiarize you with our policies for the gathering, use, maintenance and protection of personal information on the Site.
More specifically, this Policy summarizes how Hinterland handles the personal and other information users of the Site provide while accessing and using the Site. Please review this Policy carefully.
Hinterland reserves the right to change its Policy at any time, in which event the Site will contain a notice of the change. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting to the Site. Personal Information Collected on the Site
We may collect information from a variety of sources, including from you. The types of personal information we may collect about you through the Site includes: (i) your contact information, such as name, address, e-mail address, phone numbers; (ii) claim information, including policy number, and information of your loss, (iii) employment history information if you seek employment with us which might include your work history and salary information, and (iv) your activity on our Site, as further described below.
The Site is not directed to children. Hinterland does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If you are concerned about your child’s use of the Site, you may use web-filtering technology to supervise or limit access to the Site.
Purposes for Collection and Use of Personal Information Collected on the Site
We collect and use the personal and other information described above and elsewhere in the Policy in order to carry out our business functions and provide a high quality of service. In general, we will use the information we collect about you only for the purpose it was collected, as otherwise provided in this Policy, and as permitted or required by law. Other purposes include:
- To fulfill or meet the reason you provided the information. For example, if you share your name and contact information to ask a question about our products and services, we will use that personal information to respond to your inquiry. If you provide your personal information to purchase products and/or services, we will use that information to process your payment and facilitate delivery.
- To make the Site available to you;
- To provide you with information, products, or services you request from us.
- To provide you with content which is tailored to your individual tastes;
- To maintain any registered account that you hold with us;
- To contact you (including by push notifications and email) about availability of products, promotional offers and products and services which we think may interest you. We may provide these communications via email, postal mail, online advertising, social media, telephone, text message (including SMS and MMS), push notifications, in-app messaging, and other means. Of course, if at any time you no longer wish to receive such communications, you have the option of unsubscribing from our mailing list for that communication;
- For testing, research, analysis, and product development, including to develop and improve our Site, products, and services
- To communicate with you in social media concerning our products and services;
- To carry out our obligations and enforce our rights including those arising from any contracts entered into with you including for billing, payment, and collections;
- Where we have a legal right or duty to use or disclose your personal data (including for crime and fraud prevention and combating and to comply with a court order) or for company acquisition/asset sale;
- To ensure that content from our services is presented in the most effective manner for you and your device;
- To administer, secure, adapt and improve our services, the Site and for internal operations, including, for example, to prevent fraud and abuse of our services; to troubleshoot software bugs and operational problems; to conduct data analysis, testing, and research; and to monitor and analyze usage and activity trends;
- To provide customer service and engage in quality control activities concerning our products and services;
- To manage our recruiting efforts and employment and workforce relationships. These activities include, for example, sourcing and processing employment applications, onboarding employees and contingent workers, and carrying out a range of employments activities relating to the employment relationship, such as compensation, benefits, promotion, discipline, termination, and certain post termination activities.
- To comply with legal obligations applicable to Hinterland, including to respond to law enforcement requests and as required by applicable law, court order, or governmental regulations;
- Obtaining external (legal) advice and/or the establishment, exercise or substantiation of a legal claim;
- As necessary or appropriate to protect the rights, property, security, and safety of us, our employees, our consumers, our information systems, and the public; and
- To evaluate or conduct a merger, divestiture, restructuring, reorganization, dissolution, or other sale or transfer of some or all of our assets, whether as a going concern or as part of bankruptcy, liquidation, or similar proceeding, in which personal information held by us is among the assets transferred.
Additionally, Hinterland may compile statistical information concerning the usage of the Site. This information allows Hinterland to monitor its utilization and continuously improve its quality. Examples of this information would include, but not be limited to, the number of visitors to the Site, or to sections or pages within the Site, patterns of traffic flowing through the Site, length of time spent on the Site, or in sections or pages of the Site, the other sites that refer visitors to the Site, the pages of the Site that visitors frequently use as entry and exit points, utilization of the browser and operating systems and versions used by visitors to the Site.
In order to compile this information, Hinterland may collect and store your IP address, your operating system version, your browser version, the pages you visit within the Site, the length of time you spend on pages within the Site, the site from which you linked to ours, search terms you used in search engines which resulted in you linking to the Site, etc. While all of this information can be associated with the IP address your computer had while you visited the Site, it will not be associated with you as an individual, or associated with any other information you may submit through the Site, or that Hinterland may store about you for any other purposes.
Hinterland may use website “cookies” in the process of compiling the statistical information mentioned above and to tailor certain pages of the Site for your browsing convenience. A cookie file can contain information such as the URL you came from, your computer’s IP address and domain type (e.g., .com or .org, etc.), your browser type, the country, state and telephone area code where your server is located, the pages of our Site that were viewed during a visit, and any search terms that you entered on our Site. This information generally is used for internal purposes, and we do not link your URL or IP address to any personal information unless you have logged into our Site with an established account login and password. You have the option of setting your browser to reject cookies, but our Site may not function correctly if you do. Refer to the Help feature of your browser for information on disabling cookies. You can also set your cookie preferences for this Site at any time using the cookie preferences link in the footer.
Disclosure of Information
In general, we will not disclose your information for any purposes other than those in conjunction with the business activities requested of us and as otherwise permitted or required by law or by this Policy. We may disclose personal information described above to services providers, contractors, and third parties such as insurance carriers, reinsurers, service providers, regulatory authorities, HR vendors, attorneys, consultants, service providers, and governmental agencies for one or more of the following purposes:
- help us provide the products and services through payment processing; marketing and advertising; email, and other communications; applications, sales, claims processing, Site administration, software, platform, cloud, data storage and other technical services;
- support our recruiting, employment, and workforce relationships. These activities include, for example, sourcing and processing employment applications, onboarding employees and contingent workers, and carrying out a range of employments activities relating to the employment relationship, such as onboarding, payroll processing, leave management, benefits, promotion, discipline, termination, and certain post termination activities;
- comply with federal, state, or local laws;
- comply with a civil, criminal, or regulatory inquiry, investigation, subpoena, or summons by federal, state, or local authorities;
- cooperate with law enforcement agencies concerning conduct or activity that we reasonably and in good faith believe may violate federal, state, or local laws;
- exercise or defend legal claims; or
- as part of a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, or other transaction in which the third party assumes control or acquires of all or part of the assets of our business.
Additionally, in the course of our normal business activities, we may disclose collected information to both affiliates and non-affiliated entities, as we deem necessary. For example, and without limitation, Hinterland may need to use or disclose this information with its third party vendors to manage its Site, respond to subpoenas, defend litigation, enhance its services, and protect Hinterland’s legal rights. We endeavor to choose affiliates and non-affiliates with similar standards to ours regarding the protection of personal information.
In no case will Hinterland sell or license personal information to third parties, except as required or permitted by law. For example, we may share personal information in connection with certain business transactions, such as the acquisition of all or substantially all of Hinterland’s assets.
Safeguarding of Information
No system for safeguarding personal or other information is 100% secure. However, we take a number of steps to reasonably safeguard the security of personal information obtained through the Site. Our employees are trained to understand the importance of confidentiality and are required to adhere to our privacy policies and procedures.
Applicable Law
This Policy is governed by the internal substantive laws of Colorado, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Jurisdiction for any claims arising under or out of this Privacy Policy shall lie exclusively with the state and federal courts within Colorado. If any provision of this Policy is found to be invalid by a court having competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of such provision shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of this Policy, which shall remain in full force and effect.
For California Residents
If you are a California resident under the age of 18, and a registered user of any Site where this Policy is posted, California law permits you to request and obtain removal of content or information you have publicly posted. You may submit your request using the contact information in this Policy. Please be aware that such a request does not ensure complete or comprehensive removal of the content or information you have posted and that there may be circumstances in which the law does not require or allow removal even if requested.
Shine the Light
If you are a California resident, California Civil Code Section 1798.83 permits you to request information regarding the disclosure of your personal information by Hinterland to third parties for the third parties’ direct marketing purposes. Requests may be made one time per calendar year. If applicable, this information would include the categories of customer information and the names and addresses of those businesses with which we disclosed customer information for the immediately prior calendar year (e.g., requests made in 2026 will receive information regarding 2025 sharing activities).
